Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) is placed at Bakshibazar area of the Dhaka city nearby the University of Dhaka. In 1905 before the Partition of Bengal, the college's main building was built that actually used as secretariat of the newly formed provinces of East Bengal. In 1921 when the University of Dhaka was established, the huge building used as University's medical center. The Dhaka University council requested to the British Government establish a separated Medical College in Dhaka. That time the proposal was delayed for the second world war. That time it used for the American armed forces medical hospital. Finally the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital established in 1946. From 10 July DMC started their academic activities and that day is celebrated as “DMC DAY".
Every year, nearly
65,000 students sit for the admission test examination to get chance
for studying in Medical colleges. The top 197 students get chance to
study in Dhaka Medical College. About 20 foreign students get chance
to study as merit. And every “Batch” has a prefix 'K' before
their number like Onirban K-71, Badhvanga K-72 etc. At first there
was no female students, but now about half of the students are

Dhaka Medical College and Hospital has a reputed medical services for our country. The 100 beds medical hospital has grown to become the largest hospital after adding more 500 beds in 2013. Now Dhaka Medical College Hospital has 2300 bed in their hospital.

When Dhaka Medical College started there were only 4 departments. Medicine, Surgery, gynecology and otolaryngology. Initially there have not Anatomy or physiology departments but they attend those classes at Sir Salimullah Medical College. The first principal of Dhaka Medical College was Dr. Major W.J. Virgin (01.07.46 – 14.08.47) and present principal of Dhaka Medical College is Professor Quazi Deen Mohammad. The Dhaka Medical College and Hospital involved in all national movements of Bangladesh like Bengali Language Movement (1952), Liberation War (1971). And still now they are contributing in National development by their services.
